In 2001, Founding Alchemist Frederick Schilling created DAGOBA out of a love for fine foods and a desire to offer quality, innovation and Full Circle Sustainability through chocolate.
After fine tuning formulations in his kitchen and scouring the world for the finest organic cacao, Frederick and some dedicated family and friends began producing and wrapping the first bars by hand. Dagoba has grown considerably since then but they are still family owned and manufacture in small batches.
What makes Dagoba different?
We believe that differences are what make the world of chocolate so wonderful, and respect the many great chocolate companies that exist.
We’re equally dedicated to quality and sustainability, instead of focusing on one or the other. Each ingredient is interdependent and essential in our drive for pure perfection.
We work directly with producers to source cacao under equitable terms, instead of purchasing it from unknown sources under unknown terms.
Our products are innovative—including unique flavor infusions and the first organic single origins on the market. The primary ingredient in our dark bars is cacao, not sugar, and we don’t add vegetable oil or fillers. All products are certified organic.
We only use fine flavor organic cacao from producers who use sustainable methods that have been perfected across generations. Their beans have complex profiles ranging from highly aromatic to subtle nuances.
We collaborate with producers and communities on post-harvest processing, infrastructure improvements, ecological projects; and regularly explore new sources to expand the circle.
This sourcing model is rare in our industry, and quite challenging. We would take no other path because we understand the rewards for everyone in the circle. Consumers enjoy high quality organic chocolate, the environment remains strong and producers can support their families and communities.
Our products have gained high regards because of quality and attention from the source to the store. This care starts in the bio diverse rainforests that provide the optimal growing conditions for cacao and shelter migratory birds, butterflies and countless other species. It continues through relationships with farmers, precision in harvesting, and our employee’s dedication.
We are dedicated to full circle sustainability: crafting exquisite chocolate that blends quality, ecology, farmer equity and community. We seek fine flavor, organic and sustainably grown cacao through direct, equitable partnerships and produce in small batches with great care.

The first chocolate manufacturer to be 100% Organic Certified
All of our products are certified organic. Certified Organic cacao farmers don’t use any chemical pesticides or fertilizers, the beans aren’t fumigated with methyl bromide (a carcinogen and ozone-depleter) and beans are not mixed with non-organic ones. Our cacao is grown in the natural rainforest, preserving biodiverse, fragile habitats.
We also operate a dedicated organic facility and go beyond cacao to use certified organic sugar, essential oils, fruits, and nuts as available. All ingredients are GMO-free and non-irradiated
